5 kW Solar System: Cost, Generation & Space Requirement
28 June 2026 7 min read
A 5 kW rooftop system is one of the most common residential sizes in India, typically suiting homes with moderate air-conditioning use and a monthly bill in the mid-thousands.
Generation depends on irradiation. At around 4.9 peak sun hours and realistic system losses, a 5 kW array can be expected to produce roughly 6,500–7,500 kWh per year, varying by season, soiling and shading.
Space requirement is often underestimated. Nine to ten modules need shade-free area plus service walkways — plan for a usable roof area in the region of 400–500 sq.ft. for a conventional layout, or an elevated structure if terrace usage matters.
Cost is driven by structure height, cable runs, module and inverter selection, and earthing/lightning protection. Ask for a line-item proposal rather than a single lump sum.
