Net metering lets your rooftop system export surplus generation to the grid and offset it against your import, with a bidirectional meter recording both directions.
Rules are set at state level: capacity limits relative to your sanctioned load, settlement periods, treatment of surplus at year end, and eligibility by consumer category all vary and change over time.
Because of that variation, treat any 'guaranteed export credit' claim with caution. Confirm the currently applicable regulation for your DISCOM and connection type.
Where net metering is restricted, a self-consumption-first design — sizing for daytime load rather than total consumption — usually delivers better value.
